Mesa, AZ — A fire at an apartment complex on the west side of Mesa led to emergency evacuations and a multi-agency response Friday evening. The incident occurred at 1840 W. Emelita Ave. at approximately 7:40 p.m., when residents reported seeing smoke and flames coming from one of the units in building 2.
The Mesa Fire Department received a 911 call around 7:30 p.m., alerting them to the fire. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed visible flames and smoke billowing from the unit. The call was quickly upgraded to a working fire, triggering a full-scale response from nearby agencies.
Fire units from both Mesa and Tempe, alongside Mesa Police and utility provider SRP, were dispatched to the scene. Mesa Fire’s Battalion Chief, upon assessing the situation, requested assistance from Mesa Police to begin evacuating several neighboring units due to the potential danger of the spreading fire and smoke.
Emergency personnel swiftly evacuated affected residents, ensuring safety while crews worked to contain the flames. The fire was brought under control within an hour. By 8:40 p.m., the Battalion Chief on site declared the fire contained and canceled additional units from responding. Most emergency crews were released from the scene shortly after.
