Police say a 7-year-old boy was buying fruit at a grocery store at 1356 Jerome Avenue when Fort grabbed money from his hand.

When the boy’s mother tried to stop her, Fort punched the mother in the face, police say. She then fled north toward East 170th Street.

EMS treated the mother on the scene.

The mother said she was scared and tried to protect her two children, who both have special needs. She added the incident has not only traumatized her son but it’s also left her shaken.

The owner of the market said he had seen the woman before walking around the neighborhood asking people for money.
