Man dies after being shot by Corpus Christi police officer Monday afternoon

A Corpus Christi Police Department officer shot and killed a man Monday afternoon after police say the man shot into a neighborhood several times and waved a handgun at officers near a car wash on Leopard Street and Nueces Bay Boulevard.

Two officers were arriving with a prisoner at the back gate of the city Detention Center at 2:12 p.m., according to a public statement given by Police Chief Mike Markle on Monday afternoon. While they were finishing paperwork with the prisoner, a young man walked toward the officers with a handgun, firing the weapon into the area and pointing the gun at the officers, the chief said.

One officer responded by shooting the man, Markle said. Markle believed the officer struck the man twice, but he said he had not confirmed the number of gunshots as of Monday afternoon.

The man was taken by medics to a local hospital, where he later died from the injuries, the chief said.

Markle said that he has reviewed one camera that confirmed the information given in his report, and that several cameras in the area will be reviewed and collected to finish the investigation.
