Hilltop Fire Department asks voters to vote ‘yes’ on ballots to make station safer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Hilltop Fire Department is asking voters to vote “yes” to two local questions on their ballots, which Hilltop Fire Chief Donald Millis believes will make the job safer and more efficient for his team.

The two local questions, which will only be on the ballots to voters in the Hilltop Fire District’s coverage area, are about a millage increase and approval of a bond referendum.

“We’re just trying to plan for the future. We’re at 45 mills now, we’re asking for 55 mills,” said Millis.

According to Millis, the last time a bond referendum was approved was in 2017.

The second question is about a $2.5 million bond referendum which would allow the station to buy a new fire engine which Millis says costs about $1.3 million.

“It’s [a] $2.5 million dollar [bond referendum], basically what we’re doing is taking some of the money and putting it towards the station and we’re looking at buying a new fire engine for it,” said Millis.

7NEWS covered some of the issues that plagued the station back in June .
