Students in Columbus operate surgical robots

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Students from Britt David Elementary, Richard’s Middle School, and Columbus State University spent the morning learning about robotics in surgical procedures.

At Piedmont Columbus Regional, students took turns operating surgical robots Davinci and Ion. These robots are used in general surgeries, gastric bypass procedures, and more.

The Director of Surgeries Services at Piedmont Columbus Regional Nathan Long told News 3 why getting students familiar with surgical technology is important.

“It’s important for the nursing students to get experience and it allows them to know how the procedure is performed and how to better care for the patient post operatively,” Long says. “For our robotic students, it gives them exposure to what the robot does and then possibly how they would be able to either create or repair the robot in the future.”

Long says giving students opportunities like these allows them to advise their future patients and understand the benefits of robots in surgical operations.
