Portland Public Schools study finds students prefer ‘off and away’ phone policies

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – Portland Public Schools unveiled the results of a study finding most of the district’s high schoolers support “off and away” cell phone policies in class.

Results from the Personal Electronic Device study were released Oct. 15 and presented during Monday afternoon’s PPS Board of Education meeting .

During the study, PPS surveyed 2,147 high school students and visited schools using Yondr — a pouch that locks away student’s cell phones during the school day. PPS also held focus groups with students from Grant High School and Cleveland High School, which use Yondr.

When asked about their cell phone use in school, a majority of students — 1,699 — said they text during school, followed by 1,629 students who said they use their phones for classwork, and 1,092 students who reported taking photos or videos in class.

Nearly 600 respondents said they browse the internet in school, 500 said they use social media, and nearly 240 said they play games on their phones.
