Two passengers steered a bus to safety in Colorado after the driver suffered a medical emergency and collapsed while behind the wheel, Mountain Metropolitan Transit said.
The driver was operating the Route 1 bus from Hillside to Hancock Plaza in Colorado Springs around 7:45 a.m. on Oct. 14 when he experienced a medical emergency and collapsed. Only three people were on the bus at the time of the incident, one of which was the driver, and two passengers, MTT spokesperson Elaine Sheridan told USA TODAY Tuesday.
One of the passengers noticed the driver was in distress and got up to check on him.
“This caught the attention of another passenger who quickly moved from the back of the bus and safely brought it to a stop when he saw the driver fall from his seat,” Sheridan said.
Surveillance footage released by MMT shows the two passengers rushing toward the front of the bus when they see the driver in distress. One of the passengers can be seen quickly getting behind the wheel and bringing the vehicle to a stop.
