High school roundup: Davidson Day sends soccer, volleyball teams to state finals

The jump from 2A to 3A hasn’t slowed the Davidson Day athletic program.

The Patriots won semifinal matches Tuesday in boys’ soccer and girls’ volleyball to advance to Saturday’s N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association championships.

Davidson Day won state titles in both soccer and volleyball a year ago, but its enrollment moved the school to a larger size classification.

Also gaining berths in Saturday’s finals were Gaston Day’s boys’ soccer, girls’ volleyball and girls’ tennis teams.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Country Day gained a berth in Saturday’s field hockey finals.

Davidson Day 3, St. David’s School 1: The Patriots advanced to the 3A finals as the No. 7 seed, knocking off their third-seeded foes from Raleigh. Davidson Day (16-4) won the 2A state crown last year and fell in the quarterfinals two years ago.

The Patriots will travel to fifth-seeded Cape Fear Christian for Saturday’s 3A championship.

Rabun Gap School 5, Carmel Christian 1: Rabun Gap (15-3-3) advanced to the 4A finals, pulling away from Carmel Christian (10-6) in the closing minutes. Jose Luis Carillo’s goal with eight minutes left gave the host Eagles a 4-1 lead, and they added a goal on a penalty kick in the final minute.
