e.Coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s reported in states including Wisconsin, Iowa

On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it is investigating a “fast-moving outbreak” of e.Coli that has left 49 people sick across 10 states.

While no recall has been announced, the CDC says that most sick people have reported eating a Quarter Pounder from McDonald’s.

Among the 49 who have become ill, with onset dates ranging from Sept. 27 to Oct. 11, 10 have required hospitalization and one has died.

“The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses,” the CDC notice states.

“Investigators are working quickly to confirm which food ingredient is contaminated,” the announcement says, adding that McDonald’s has proactively stopped using fresh slivered onions and quarter pound beef patties in several states.

No cases have been reported in Minnesota. However, cases have been reported in nearby states including Wisconsin and Iowa.

E.Coli cases have been reported in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Of the 49 cases, 26 were reported in Colorado, including the death linked to the outbreak.
