Reckless Driver Charged After Fatal Crash Involving Tractor-Trailer

WARREN COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police (VSP) continue to investigate a two-vehicle crash that killed a Roanoke man on Monday.  

According to an October 22, 2024 media release emailed by Virginia State Police (VSP) Sergeant Brent W. Coffey, the incident occurred on October 21. 

At 12:59 p.m., a 2008 Dodge Caliber was traveling on the I-66 entrance ramp from northbound Route 522 at the 6-mile marker. The driver suddenly lost control, ran off the left side of the ramp, crossed the westbound lanes and collided with a westbound 2000 Kenworth tractor-trailer.

The impact of the crash caused the tractor-trailer to run off the right side of the roadway, collide with the bridge guardrail, overturn off the bridge, and come to rest on northbound Route. 522. The tractor-trailer caught fire and was soon completely involved.

The driver of the truck, Roger B. Martin, 67, of Roanoke, died at the scene. 

The driver of the Dodge, Dawn M. Mongold, 58, of Hedgesville, WV., was not injured in the crash. She was wearing a seatbelt.
