SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A Spartanburg company that specializes in manufacturing is leading efforts on a new initiative to improve the environment.
Officials at The Oshkosh Defense Spartanburg Assembly have partnered with Hatcher Garden and The South Carolina Wildlife Federation on a new wildlife preserve, benefitting multiple communities in the Upstate.
The preserve can be seen just outside the doors of the Oshkosh Defense Spartanburg Assembly plant, and it stretches all across the property.
“We flow with nature. It’s really cool to see a manufacturing facility work alongside what would naturally occur anyway. So, we have trees, we have perennials, we have shrubs, we have bird boxes. We have a little bit of everything,” said Oshkosh Defense Facilities and Maintenance Manager Trent McJunkin.
McJunkin said they’ve installed 500 plants since introducing the preserve earlier this summer.
There are also nest boxes that support the repopulation of birds like geese and killdeer, as well as small mammals. McJunkin explained their initiative encourages communities to work together and fight back against habitat loss.
