Open container law change remains stagnant after being tabled by city council

About a month ago, city council tabled an ordinance that would ban open containers of alcohol, with exceptions.

“We’re doing some dangerous things,” said Ed Brzezinski, a member of Erie City Council. “There’s gotta be a meeting of the mind when a problem occurs.”

Erie City Co. will revisit potential open container law change on later date

A potential ban on open containers of alcohol in Erie is in a purgatory of sorts after city council decided to table an ordinance in September.

That ordinance has remained on the table since then and according to some involved, there’s skepticism that it’ll be touched at all in the near future.

It needs five votes to be removed from the table and put back onto an agenda, and from what JET 24/FOX 66 reporters heard from council, the support for its passage as written has faded, which comes as good news for downtown breweries.

“A new ordinance has to be introduced and then first read, and voted upon again. I think if that were to happen again, the same support would be shown,” said Jeff McCullor, co-owner of Erie Ale Works.
