Imperial Beach Democrats rescind endorsement of Vargas

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — The Imperial Beach Democratic Club earlier this month quietly rescinded its endorsement of Board of Supervisors Chair Nora Vargas in her bid for re-election as tensions continue to mount over the Tijuana River sewage crisis.

The organization said its decision hinged on issues like her mixed messaging on local air quality, slowing of efforts to establish a federal environmental superfund site at the Tijuana River Valley and the county’s arbitrary distribution of air purifiers to South Bay residents.

Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre, who leads the Democratic Club, has previously expressed discontentment with the county’s handling of the crisis, frequently urging it to take more urgent action.

“The people are screaming bloody murder about the problem and frankly, they don’t want to hear excuses right now,” former Imperial Beach Mayor Brian Bilbray told KUSI Wednesday.

Vargas sits in the seat representing the first supervisorial district, which spans much of southern San Diego County including Imperial Beach.
