Restoration needed for WWII memorial in Enola

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – Midstate veterans are calling on the community to help restore a World War II memorial built and dedicated in 1949.

The memorial sits on the corner of West Shady Lane and North Enola Drive on the American Legion Post 751 property in Enola.

“It contains the names of 619 military personnel from our community who served in World War II,” said American Legion Post 751 Sergeant at Arms, David Tyson.

Historic Cumberland County Peace Church ownership could soon be transferred

Those with a star next to their name died in combat.

“It’s a kind of a community landmark. And it served to honor those people who deserve the honor that they helped to save our country and our freedom,” said Tyson.

When you look at the memorial, you will notice plaques with the names of soldiers are missing. They fell off and broke into pieces.

“That’s why we want to get together and try to restore this monument back to its original glory,” said Tyson.

Tyson says the memorial was refurbished in 2010, but now it needs a complete restoration, making sure these soldiers are never forgotten. The restoration is going to cost around $60,000. So far, more than $7,000 has been raised.
