North Charleston moving forward with plans for new skatepark

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A new skatepark in North Charleston could be on the horizon.

North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess and city council approved grant funding last week to design the park and get the process moving forward.

The park will include opportunities to teach young people how to skate correctly through clinics, and competitions will be part of the plan for the new skatepark.

“Traditional sports aren’t for everyone, and this park will be a perfect space for skaters to express themselves and connect with the community. We’re just in the planning stages, but this is a huge step forward,” the city said in a Facebook post .

John Knight, co-founder of Park Circle Skate, said the organization is partnering with the city to make skateboarding more accessible.

“We believe skateboarding is vitally important to this area because not all people, especially children, gravitate towards traditional sports like baseball and basketball,” he said. “Having an outlet like skateboarding or roller skating and a place to do that that’s safe away from cars on the street is super important.”
