9 million Pennsylvanians registered to vote in the 2024 election

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – More than 9 million Pennsylvanians are registered to vote in the 2024 election following this week’s voter registration deadline.

The Pennsylvania Department of State says 9,088,583 are registered to vote, which is almost 2,400 voters fewer than there were registered for the 2020 presidential election .

There are 3,971,607 Democrats and 3,673,783 Republicans registered this year with the remaining 1,443,193 listed with no affiliation or another party.

Voter registration data does show a larger shift among Democrats switching to the Republican party than vice versa. In 2024, the Department of State says 26,035 Republicans switched to Democrat. Meanwhile, there were 65,068 Democrats who switched their affiliation to Republican.

In the week leading up to the voter registration deadline, nearly three times as many Democrats switched their affiliation to Republican (3,942 to 1,379).

More than 80,000 voters removed their major party affiliation this year.

According to new data released on Thursday morning, Pennsylvania county boards of election have received 1,208,063 mail ballots. As of 8 a.m. there have been 1,945,960 mail ballot applications approved in Pennsylvania, meaning 62% of mail ballots issued have been returned.
