Pros and cons of Florida’s third amendment passing this upcoming election

PENSACOLA, Fla. ( WKRG ) — Florida’s third amendment focuses on legalizing recreational marijuana use for Floridians and out-of-state visitors 21 years of age and older.

Amendment 3 is one of two citizen initiative amendments. The public can bypass the state legislature if enough ‘yes’ votes are cast.

If passed, the amendment would also remove criminal or civil penalties for those who possess and use up to 3 ounces of cannabis. Marijuana dispensaries and other state-licensed entities could cultivate, process, manufacture and sell cannabis products.

According to the Florida Amendment Guide, the legalization would contribute to tax revenues. These revenues could be used to fund a variety of Florida’s initiatives.

“There’s an argument that there would be an increased tax revenue from having state regulation of what is currently a black market,” the University of West Florida’s Visiting Assistant Instructor of Government Melissa Dow said.
