Cook County approves more than $24M in settlements involving disgraced Chicago detective

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cook County Board is expected to issue settlements totaling more than 24 million dollars involving a disgraced Chicago Police detective.

The latest settlements involve eight cases investigated by detective Reynaldo Guevara.

He’s alleged to have coerced confessions, fabricated evidence and framed dozens of people who were prosecuted and, in many cases, exonerated. Some spent decades in prison.

The county’s role is in the prosecutions. Settlements involving Guevara are in the tens of millions of dollars.

The city paid more than 60 million dollars earlier this year, and there are other pending cases, as well as lawsuits. More than 30 pending.

Guevara has refused to testify. In one 2018 case, invoking his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination more than 200 times.

Guevara, who spent more than 30 years on the job, has never been charged with a crime. He retired in 2005 and has a $91,000 pension. He’s 80 years old.
