A couple of Alabama Crimson Tide players — wide receivers Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard — went viral during Bama’s 24-17 loss to the Tennessee Vols this past weekend for pretending to shoot jump shots during a quarterback sneak.
The quarterback sneak was successful, but the fake jump shots almost certainly didn’t help Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe pick up the yard that he needed for the first down.
Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan, who was a graduate assistant/de facto QBs coach at Tennessee from 2014 to 2016, offered a cryptic explanation for the jump shots earlier this week.
“Yeah, you’re talking about the quarterback sneak? Yeah, there’s nothing on the field that we’re not coaching,” said Sheridan. “So that’s sort of how I’d answer that.”
On Wednesday, Alabama wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard was asked about the fake jump shots and he also offered a cryptic explanation.
“Our players are very in tune with the things that we need to do on the football field to really make plays successful,” said Shephard when asked about the wide receivers’ job on that play. “And it was a successful play. We got a first down.”
