Kevin Kline Shares Secret to Long Marriage

Additional Coverage:

Actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates have defied Hollywood’s notoriously short-lived marriages by staying together since 1989.

Kline believes their success stems from not living in Hollywood and avoiding the superficiality that often accompanies it. Despite their fame, they have maintained low-key lifestyles.

Kline credits Cates with being a grounding force in his life, describing her as intelligent, kind, and honest. He attributes his happiness to her presence.

Kline and Cates met in 1983 and began dating two years later. They married in 1989, the same year Kline won an Oscar for “A Fish Called Wanda.”

Cates starred in popular 1980s comedies like “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” before retiring from acting in the 1990s. She now owns a boutique in Manhattan.

The couple has two children, Owen and Greta, and has raised their family on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
