Ship Operators Fined $102 Million for Destroying Key Bridge

Additional Coverage:

The companies operating the ship that crashed into Baltimore’s Key Bridge in March have agreed to pay $102 million to cover the costs of the federal cleanup.

The settlement with Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine will resolve civil claims from the Justice Department. The ongoing criminal investigation into the crash is separate.

The Dali ship struck the bridge on March 26, killing six workers and disrupting access to the Port of Baltimore. Federal agencies spent millions removing debris and responding to the disaster.

The settlement funds will cover the federal government’s cleanup costs, which will not include the cost of rebuilding the bridge, which is being handled by Maryland.

The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the crash, which involved two power blackouts on the Dali before the collision.
