People are Spotting These Mysterious Boxes Around an Alabama Lake: What are They?

Most of Alabama is currently experiencing a moderate drought, making lake levels lower than usual for this time of year. Although levels are not historically low, people have noticed something odd. Along the shores of a popular lake in north central Alabama, people have been spotting these strange boxes – exposed while the water is down. What are they? Fish traps? Cheater boxes? Exposed Coffins? Here’s what locals are saying and where the boxes are located.

Smith Lake

Most of the mysterious boxes have been found along the shores of Lewis Smith Lake in north central Alabama. Smith Lake was created in 1961 by the Alabama Power Company. The lake covers over 21,000 acres in Cullman, Walker, and Winston Counties, and hosts many regional and national fishing tounaments each year. The photo above was posted in the Facebook group, “All Things Walker County,” after originally being posted in the private group, “Smith Lake Community.” In that group, another member posed the same question last October when he spotted several of the boxes in the Clear Creek area. Of course, people had fun with the post and guessed everything from “Jimmy Hoffa,” to “absentee ballot boxes,” but let’s take a look at some of the community answers that could best solve the mystery of the boxes.
