Suspect in Aug. 4 Des Moines homicide of Marla Knigge identified through DNA

Thanks to DNA testing, the Des Moines Police Department has identified Jake Berman as the suspect in the Aug. 4 2024 murder of Marla Knigge, who was found in a condominium complex.

Officers initially responded to a condo complex near S. 219th Street and 7th Avenue South that day after receiving reports of a person down.

Upon arrival, police discovered the 69-year-old Knigge unconscious with severe injuries to her head and face. Despite efforts by emergency responders, sadly, Knigge was pronounced dead at the scene.

A thorough investigation followed, with detectives from Des Moines Police and the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab collecting evidence, including DNA samples. On Oct. 21, 2024, DNA results confirmed Berman’s involvement in Knigge’s death.

Along with the DNA and other evidence collected, detectives developed probable cause to forward charges of Murder in the 2nd Degree to the King County Prosecutor’s Office.

Berman, who has a lengthy criminal record, is currently in custody on unrelated charges.
