Two PPS schools receive boxes of books from the Library of Congress

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Two Portland schools received a special delivery of books straight from the Library of Congress on Thursday morning.

Students from Markham Elementary, currently situated at Jackson Middle School, and Robert Gray Middle School were delivered hand-picked books from the national library’s surplus collection.

Fall colors expected to peak around Portland soon

Both schools received heavy damage during the January 2024 ice storm that wreaked havoc across the region, and while Gray Middle School has since reopened, Markham’s repairs are still underway.

PPS Superintendent Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong was joined by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, and they read to Markham students and visited with students at Gray.

“I know how important it is for students to be able to have a wide range of materials to read and to learn from,” Bonamici said.

Positively Portland

According to Bonamici, the Library of Congress gets two copies of every book that is published in the U.S., but they only keep one.
