Judge Orders Virginia to Reinstate Thousands of Voters

Additional Coverage:

A federal judge has halted Virginia’s efforts to remove potential non-citizens from voter rolls. The judge found that the removals were systematic, not individualized, and violated federal law.

The Justice Department had sued Virginia, arguing that the removals violated the National Voter Registration Act, which prohibits systematic voter roll maintenance within 90 days of an election.

Governor Glen Youngkin has defended the state’s system, claiming it is not systematic and uses an “individualized process.” However, the judge disagreed, finding that the process resulted in eligible voters being mistakenly removed.

Youngkin criticized the judge’s ruling, which was issued just 11 days before Election Day. He said the state would immediately petition for an injunction to block the order.

The ruling is expected to restore voting rights to around 1,600 Virginia residents.
