Governor Newsom Announces Over $1.3 Billion for Vital California Public Transportation Projects

SACRAMENTO – California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a significant $1.3 billion investment into 27 public transportation projects across the state through the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP). This funding aims to enhance transit and rail services, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and expand zero-emission transit options.

The awarded projects, spanning from zero-emission buses in the Central Valley to essential rail infrastructure in Orange County, will remove the equivalent of over 1.3 million gas-powered cars from California’s roads, aligning with the state’s climate goals. For example, the Imperial County Transportation Commission received $12.6 million to build an intermodal transportation center and introduce zero-emission vans in Calexico, a significant step for the area. Golden Empire Transit in Bakersfield was awarded over $117 million to expand bus frequency, add hydrogen fueling infrastructure, and improve passenger amenities. Additionally, $125 million was allocated to the Orange County Transportation Authority to strengthen the Los Angeles–San Diego rail corridor against coastal erosion.
