California Department of Education Issues Updated Air Quality Guidance for Schools During Wildfires

SACRAMENTO—The California Department of Education (CDE) has released updated air quality guidance for schools to support local decisions on activities and closures during wildfire smoke events. The new School Outdoor Air Quality Activity Recommendations provide resources to help schools assess whether to cancel classes, remain open, or modify activities when air quality is impacted by wildfire smoke.

With increasingly frequent and severe wildfires, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond emphasized the importance of these clear guidelines to protect student health and maintain safety. “It is vital that we understand the harm of wildfire smoke and our schools have a clear plan for how to safely navigate these unfortunate circumstances,” Thurmond stated.

The updated guidance encourages school districts to monitor local air quality conditions and coordinate with health agencies to make informed decisions. The recommendations were developed in partnership with the California Department of Public Health, the California Air Resources Board, and other state agencies, reinforcing a collaborative approach to student safety during wildfire season.
