Oklahoma wildfires burn more than 2,200 acres near Wichita Mountains

COMANCHE COUNTY ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Evacuations have been lifted for residents living near the Rush fire in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.

According to the state’s fire weather map, the Rush fire is just west of The Holy City, has burned 1,500 acres, and remains active. The Thompson Hill fire has burned more than 700 acres just southeast of that area and remains active.

A post on the Wildlife Refuge’s Facebook page reports that current wind conditions have created excessive smoke on the east side of the refuge, forcing the closure of the visitor center and the Doris campground.

Until further notice from the refuge staff or other entities associated with the fire, please avoid the area. You can track Oklahoma and Texas wildfires online using satellite data.
