Walmart rolling out new gas stations in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The nation’s largest retailer is bringing some competition for gas stations in the Ozarks.

This week, Bentonville-based Walmart filed plans with the City of Springfield for its first two local Walmart Fuel Stations.

According to the documents filed with the Building Development Department, at least two sites are planned. The first will be on South Campbell in front of the existing Walmart Supercenter. The second will be in front of the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Mount Vernon Street off West Bypass. The plans for both are still pending approval.

Renderings of the West Bypass location reveal the project will include 16 gas pump spots. Other Walmart Fuel Stations across the country include small retail centers that sell items like beverages, snacks, and other common convenience store merchandise.

Many people in the Ozarks are familiar with Murphy USA gas stations near a few local Walmart locations. A common assumption is that Murphy USA falls under the Walmart brand umbrella.  However, that company is a separate entity with which Walmart has partnered over the years to build stations on its properties. The new fuel stations will be 100% Walmart-owned, branded, and operated. Walmart also runs gas stations at its local Sam’s Clubs, which are only for members.
