Letter: Vote ‘yes’ on De Pere School District maintenance, safety and security referendum

I am a resident and parent writing to express my support for the Unified School District of De Pere’s maintenance, safety & security referendum.

We are fortunate to live in a district with true community schools, where alumni and community members show up to support our athletics, music, and arts, and share pride in our strong academic achievements. With this long, proud history comes aging buildings in need of repair, maintenance and updates to keep our schools strong and safe for our children. Investing in the updates and permanent repairs now will save our district money in the long run; delaying will increase costs when these systems inevitably fail and require emergency repair calls and replacements with fewer options, resulting in costly short-term fixes or expedited replacements.

A well-maintained school is more efficient in terms of energy savings, as well as education. Teachers and staff having to clean up leaks from windows, ceilings and floors, taking time away from the most important focus — our children’s education. ADA and pavement updates will make our schools more safe and accessible to students, staff and visitors of all ages and abilities. An updated vestibule entrance at Dickinson Elementary will bring the school’s entry safety up to the highest safety standards.
