Norfolk man to return to prison for counterfeiting US currency

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk man previously convicted of counterfeiting U.S. currency will return to prison for the same crime.

Court documents show that 33-year-old Tyree Lamar Shoulders passed counterfeit money from August to December of last year.

On Aug. 6, 2023, Shoulders used two counterfeit $20 bills to buy gas at a Suffolk convenience store. Later that month, on Aug. 30, 2023, Shoulders used nine counterfeit $50 bills to buy candy and load $450 onto a bank card at another convenience store. A few months later, on Nov. 13, Shoulders attempted to use a counterfeit $50 bill and two counterfeit $10 bills to get gas at a Virginia Beach gas station.

On Dec. 5, 2023, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Shoulders’ residence in Norfolk and recovered counterfeit $10, $20, and $50 bills.

Shoulders faces three year and one month in prison for his crimes. In 2015, he was sentenced to two years in prison for the same offense.
