Deadly Attack on Iranian Police Convoy

On Saturday, an attack on a police convoy in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province resulted in the deaths of at least 10 officers. The attack occurred in the city of Gohar Kuh, approximately 745 miles southeast of Tehran.

Details about the attack remain limited. Initial reports described it as an assault by “miscreants,” but Iranian state media later confirmed the fatalities.

Advocacy group HalVash released images of a damaged police vehicle, suggesting that two security vehicles were targeted and all occupants killed. The truck appeared to have only bullet damage, indicating no explosives were used.

The interior minister has ordered an investigation into the incident. No suspects have been identified, and no group has claimed responsibility.

The attack follows a major Israeli military operation in Iran earlier Saturday morning. Sistan and Baluchestan has experienced low-level insurgency from Baluch nationalists for over two decades.

The province, one of Iran’s least developed regions, has strained relations between the Sunni Muslim residents and the Shiite theocracy. Militants have previously carried out mass casualty attacks, including one in April that killed 10 and another in December that killed 11.

Meanwhile, the Taliban is investigating reports of Afghan migrant deaths by Iranian security forces in October, potentially further escalating tensions between the two countries.
