Off-duty firefighter rescues person while condo was in a blaze

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — The Belvidere Fire Department responded to a fire inside a condominium’s attached garage and saved a bedridden individual on Saturday.

Around 2:57 p.m., fire crews were called to the 1700 block of West Chrysler Drive to find flames extending the second floor of the condominium. Firefighters were told someone needed to be rescued from inside due to a medical condition.

An off-duty Boone County Fire Lieutenant and a resident were able to safely evacuate the individual.

Multiple local fire departments were involved in extinguishing the blaze. The estimated loss due to fire damage is around $150,000.

Belvidere Fire is still investigating the cause of the fire.
