Dinuba High School exchange student wins citizenship award: ‘It’s about spreading kindness’

Aleksander Basilaia exemplifies what it means to be a good citizen and help the community, according to his Character Counts nominator Evan Halstead.

Aleksandre is a junior at Dinuba High School this year as a part of their exchange student program. After just two months of being in the U.S., he’s already made his mark on the community.

When out shopping with his host father and another exchange student, they were faced with a stranger having a medical crisis.

Aleksander jumped in to help her.

She was unresponsive so he laid down beside her and positioned her on her side so she would not choke. He kept her calm and continued to check her vitals until the paramedics arrived.

Aleksander is the deserving winner of the Character Counts Citizenship Award, Halstead said.

“In my country, Georgia, in Eurasia, I was a Boy Scout. I already had the knowledge of what to do in critical situations,” he said. “In the end, the way I was raised compelled me to help her, and my Boy Scout training gave me the tools to handle such situations.”
