Nearly 300,000 trees were planted over the past year by volunteers from the North East Community Forest across Northumberland, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, and rural County Durham. This initiative, supported by six regional councils, is set to absorb approximately 51,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over the next 30 years, making a meaningful contribution to climate action in the area.

The program’s leaders emphasized the importance of expanding green spaces to boost community health and environmental resilience. As part of the initiative, landowners are encouraged to collaborate with the forest group to further extend tree planting efforts, helping to create greener, healthier communities for future generations.
