EVANSVILLE — Parents with children in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. will need make sure to remember schools are closed on Election Day.
This will be the first time local schools close for voting, despite multiple locations hosting polling places for years. The EVSC school board approved the change this year with the setting of the 2024-25 school calendar.
“We know that some, about a half-dozen of our school facilities, are used as polling places,” EVSC spokesman Jason Woebkenberg said in December. “And with this many people in the community coming in and out of those voting centers, we just want to make sure we have a safe environment.”
EVSC locations set as 2024 polling places are: AIS, Caze Elementary, Cedar Hall Elementary, Plaza Park International Prep Academy, Glenwood Leadership Academy and the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center.
According to Courier & Press archives, in 2020 those same schools, except for Glenwood, hosted polling locations and were shifted to e-learning for the day. Those precautions were taken due to COVID-19 concerns.
