Who doesn’t like to sit on their back porch and enjoy a nice glass of wine? An estimated 13 million tourists visit Gatlinburg and the surrounding areas every year to spend time in the Great Smoky Mountains, visit the shops and attractions, and of course go to Dollywood. The scenic town provides a picturesque setting for a family vacation up in the mountains of the national park. But of course, tourists aren’t the only ones in those mountains. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also home to quite a few black bears, with wildlife experts estimating that there are somewhere between 1,600 and 2,000 bears living in the forest. That comes out to somewhere around 2 bears per square mile of the park, which means that there’s a fairly good chance you’ll see one of the creatures in the wild at some point during your vacation. Now, obviously it can be a little intimidating to see a black bear walking down the sidewalk, but generally these creatures keep to themselves and don’t bother you unless they’re frightened or intimidated. In fact, bear attacks on humans in the Great Smoky Mountains are actually pretty rare. There have only been two fatal bear attacks in the park’s history, with the latest coming in 2021 when a hiker was found dead and it was determined that he was likely killed by a bear. Overall though, for as many bears as there are in the park, they tend to keep to themselves – unless they smell food. Bears are omnivores, though plant material like berries and nuts make up the vast majority of their diet. But when they smell food from a nearby visitor, they can’t help but investigate – leading to some close encounters for tourists who leave out food or trash. We’ve seen quite a few videos over the years of bears approaching cabins or campsites to get a better look at their food options. But this bear apparently just wanted to stop by for a drink. Video posted to TikTok shows a black bear walking right up onto the back deck of a cabin, no doubt looking for food or trash to scavenge. But when it found a nice glass of white wine, it decided to just help itself. The bear got a taste, and at first it didn’t look too sure about whether it liked it or not, but eventually decided to go back in for more – until eventually it ended up spilling the glass and breaking it all over the place. Hey, we’ve all been there buddy.
