Victim of neighbor shooting relives his year from hell, criticizes lack of action from MPD

After a year of alleged harassment, death threats, and more from his neighbor, Davis Moturi is now recovering from a hospital bed after being shot in the back of a neck, a situation he says could have been prevented early on by Minneapolis police.

“I should be dead,” Moturi told Bring Me The News . “The way the shot was, and all the organs that it missed on its way back to my torso, I’m lucky to be alive.”

The alleged neighbor in question, John Sawchak, 54, has a long history with MPD. Since 2007, he has had 14 harassment restraining orders (HROs) placed against him, which he has allegedly ignored and violated.

While Moturi became Sawchak’s latest next-door neighbor in 2023, he claims that Sawchak harassed its previous owners too, saying: “I remember one call reports, word for word: ‘We fear for our lives. He’s outside our window,’ the same thing he was doing to us. It’s been happening for years.”

On Wednesday, Moturi was struck in the back of the neck with a bullet allegedly fired by Sawchak from his window while Moturi was trying to trim a tree that crossed over into his property. Moturi says Sawchak had constantly been harassing him and his wife and says that the shooting was only the latest violent act from his neighbor.
