LEXINGTON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A skunk has tested positive for rabies in Lexington.
The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department reported the positive infection on Monday, saying the skunk was found near Wellington Way and Chatham Drive.

The department said the skunk was discovered by a resident of the Indian Hills and Stonewall neighborhoods in ZIP code 40503.
Authorities said two dogs were exposed to the skunk and one was bitten.
The health department has posted signs in the area to notify residents about the discovery and is asking people to keep a close watch on their pets.
Residents should double-check that their pets have current rabies vaccines.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 90% of reported rabies cases happen in wildlife, with contact with infected bats leading to most human rabies deaths in the United States. The CDC said raccoons, skunks, and foxes are other common carriers.
