There is a definite movement to expand a Fayetteville park dedicated to Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., according to Stanley Jordan, who chairs the Board of Directors for the Fayetteville/Cumberland County MLK Committee.
That is positive news. People have been asking.
The $7.2 million-dollar project is funded with state and local money; development of the park has been more than 20 years in the making. When complete, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park is expected to include a 125-foot tall spire that will certainly stand out amid the trees at the park’s Blue Street location, a block from Murchison Road and near the campus of historically Black Fayetteville State University.
Setbacks to the project’s completion over the years include the deaths of park visionaries and a major delay over the best location to place the spire. Jordan said a proposed meeting next month will involve key stakeholders for the park, including Fayetteville and Cumberland County officials, the city-county Parks and Recreation Department and the Fayetteville Public Works Commission.
