Diamondbacks expected to pursue reunion with former MVP, per insider

Back in December of 2018, the Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals made a famous trade, one that sent Paul Goldschmidt to St. Louis.

Goldschmidt had spent the first eight seasons of his Major League career with Arizona, and the team had finally decided to move on from their franchise cornerstone.

With St. Louis, Goldschmidt guided the Cardinals to two National League Central titles and won an MVP award in 2022. However, he is now a free agent and likely won’t be back with the Cardinals in 2025.

According to John Denton of MLB.com , Goldschmidt is expected to be pursued by his old club.

“The D-Backs and/or Astros are expected to pursue Goldschmidt and offer him more guaranteed cash, so the likelihood is that he moves on to a contender,” Denton wrote when discussing the Cardinals chances of keeping him.

The Diamondbacks may ultimately lose Christian Walker this offseason. The veteran first baseman is a free agent as soon as the World Series reaches its conclusion.

So, it might make sense for Arizona to pursue a reunion with a former fan favorite. Goldschmidt had eight great seasons in Arizona, and after a bad final season in St. Louis, a change of scenery might benefit him.
