Man facing hate crime charges after chasing neighbor with tire iron, yelling racial slurs

MADISON, Wis. — A man faces hate crime charges after Madison police said he chased his neighbor with a tire iron while yelling racial slurs.

Police said a 24-year-old man and his neighbor got into an argument over a parking space at an apartment building in the 1800 block of Helene Parkway. Officers responded to the scene just after noon on Monday.

The man allegedly used the tire iron to damage the entrance of an apartment as well as a vehicle. Police arrested him and brought him to the Dane County Jail.

He faces charges including disorderly conduct while armed and two counts of criminal damage to property. Those charges carry hate crime enhancers.

An investigation was ongoing as of Tuesday morning and the MPD Hate Crime Task Force was notified of the incident.
