Baby Found Deceased in Idaho Safe Haven Box

Tragedy has struck in Idaho, where the body of a baby girl was discovered in a Safe Haven Baby Box. Police responded to the report at Grove Creek Medical Center on October 13th.

Safe Haven Box Intended for Live Surrenders

Safe Haven Baby Boxes are designed for anonymous surrenders of healthy newborns. However, in this case, the infant was found deceased before being placed in the box.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes founder Monica Kelsey expressed her heartbreak over the incident. Idaho law permits only the surrender of unharmed infants.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities are collaborating with the organization and hospital staff to investigate the incident. The baby was wrapped in a blanket with the placenta still attached. Kelsey emphasized the importance of following the program’s guidelines for anonymous surrenders.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes Program

Kelsey established Safe Haven Baby Boxes in 2016 to provide a safe and anonymous way for parents to surrender newborns. The boxes are equipped with alarms and medical-grade features. Since 2017, 52 infants have been surrendered through the program.

Child Welfare Laws

Safe Haven laws vary by state but typically provide anonymity to parents surrendering babies at designated locations. Florida recently extended its surrender period to 30 days, giving mothers more time to make a decision.
