US Navy member from Baton Rouge gets appreciation award for service in Italian hospital

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A member of the United States Navy from Baton Rouge was recognized for their work in Italy.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Bret Burns was assigned to the U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command in Sigonella, Italy. She received the Navy Corpsman Appreciation Award for her service at Naval Hospital Sigonella.

The award is given for professional achievement in the superior performance of duties, according to a release.

“This award was given by the Italian Kiwanis Club for superior performance and dedication to care for women and children,” said Burns. “It means a lot to me to represent my hospital and country in my host nation, not only as a surgical technician but by volunteering extra hours to the OB-GYN/General Surgery Clinic.”

The Baton Rouge native graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 2020. After graduation, Burns enrolled in the Navy where she became a certified surgical technologist in 2021 and earned an associate degree in health sciences in 2023.
