Organizations focus on lower black voter turnout

CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — While early voting is breaking records, a closer look at the numbers shows new successes with certain voting groups, while others—for whatever reason—are lagging behind previous election year totals.

“We’re trying to do everything we can, from door knocking, from phone banking, from church talking and neighborhood knocking to get the Black vote out,” said Colette Forrest, co-founder of the non-partisan Charlotte Black Voter Project.

The organization, along with the local chapter of the NAACP and the Charlotte Black Political Caucus, have been working to address the apparent downtick in early voting totals for African-American voters.

Information from the John Locke Foundation found that, for the 2020 election, over 753,000 Black voters took part in early voting.  So far in 2024, and with just days to go before early voting ends, the number sits at nearly 431,000.
