Spartanburg to launch year-long micro transit program in downtown area for 2025

A $300K micro transit pilot program is set to launch in early 2025 in downtown Spartanburg.

The program, developed by the city’s Micro-Transit Pilot Program staff and the SPARTA bus transit team, will be offered for a year in a service area that includes most of the Northside and south side of the city, as well as areas of downtown located in between along East St. John, West Main and South Church streets.

“We intend this pilot to last a year … but we want to have a six month review to let us course correct,” said Assistant City Manager Kevin Limehouse. “If there’s room for improvement, we can make adjustments, and we can see how it’s working for the city of Spartanburg from a budget standpoint, from an operations standpoint.”

City Council approved the purchase of three vehicles for the micro transit program, and one StarCraft Shuttle Bus for SPARTA transit, during their Monday meeting.

The vehicles, three Ford Transitvans and the StarCraft Shuttle Bus, are paid for in full by SCDOT State Mass Transit funds.
