Poll Reveals Deep Dissatisfaction with Leadership, Safety in California’s most misgoverned city

A new poll commissioned by the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce indicates potential upheaval at Oakland City Hall, with widespread dissatisfaction directed at both Mayor Sheng Thao and the city council. According to the annual “Pulse Poll,” 75% of respondents feel Oakland is on the wrong track, and 64% favor a recall of Mayor Thao. Additionally, 45% believe the city council is not effectively serving Oakland’s needs.

Safety concerns dominate the poll, with half of respondents reporting they feel less safe than a year ago, and nearly 70% supporting increased police presence. Although Oakland Police Department data suggests crime is decreasing, 47% perceive crime and violence as having worsened in the past year. “When residents and visitors feel unsafe, the reputation spawns out of control,” said a Chamber spokesperson, noting the negative impact on economic development, city perception, and home values.

Business sentiment mirrors safety concerns, with 44% of respondents viewing Oakland as a poor location for new businesses. The poll reflects a city grappling with perception challenges, affecting both community morale and economic outlook.
