Mom of new baby says NYCHA apartment in Marble Hill is unsafe

A single mom in Marble Hill reached out to News 12 for help after two years of issues at her NYCHA building. Laysha Colon just had a baby earlier this year, but now she says she doesn’t feel safe with her child at the Marble Hill Houses. She showed News 12 crews a broken fridge and a crumbling wall that she says NYCHA has been ignoring. “My baby has gotten sick already three times since she’s been born,” said Colon. “And now we don’t even sleep in our [bedroom] because of the powder and stuff that’s in the room, from the wall.” Colon says she’s requesting an emergency transfer to another building. NYCHA told News 12 in an email: “NYCHA staff visited the unit today and installed the resident’s new refrigerator. We are coordinating the stove replacement, plastering, painting, and electrical outlet repair. Residents in need of assistance are encouraged to call the Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 or submit work tickets through the MyNYCHA application.” ”
