Let’s taco ’bout tacos and the taquerias in Texas that make them best.
Texas Monthly, the self-professed “national magazine of Texas,” recently published its 2024 list of the 50 Best Tacos in Texas.
I love me the tacos, so naturally I had to know which taquerias the publication’s “taco editor” deemed the finest, most favorable in all of the Lone Star State.
Fair warning, they are not the usual al pastor or carne asada street tacos most of us are used to eating.
From tempura mushroom tacos “perched on a silky black bean purée” to guajillo chile paste duck-fat refried beans tacos with a blend of potato and chorizo there is some elevated stuff on this list.
The List
According to the list introduction, José R. Ralat — the author and aforementioned Taco Editor — traveled the state “from the Rio Grande Valley to the Panhandle…and El Paso to Texarkana to find the most superb tacos and taquerias.”
He wrote that he visited more than four hundred restaurants and food trucks in six months and “consumed more than 1,200″ tacos to determine the state’s best.
