Watch: Nashville driver charged after doing doughnuts, crashing into police cruiser on I-24

A 22-year-old man is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer in connection with a crash involving a cruiser on Interstate 24 Tuesday morning.

Metro Nashville police said the driver fled a stop initiated on Shelby Avenue when officer Joe Medina witnessed the man driving recklessly on Koreans Veterans Boulevard around 1:30 a.m.

In a one-minute-and-two-second video released by MNPD, the 22-year-old is seen swerving left to right after entering westbound along I-24 and then swerving again to face the officer before driving around the cruiser and performing doughnuts in the roadway before crashing into the cruiser head-on.

Police said in a release the man fled after hitting the cruiser and drove back up the entrance ramp.

Police said Medina sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital, treated and released Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives were able to track the 22-year-old as the driver involved. He turned himself in Tuesday afternoon.

In addition to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the 22-year-old is charged with felony evading arrest in a motor vehicle and misdemeanors charges of leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, and reckless driving.
